The working idea of a concrete pump is to use pressure to move concrete through pipes. The following is the workflow of a concrete pump truck.

1. Preparation

The concrete pump truck arrives at the building site. It drives to the work area and stops on a hard and flat ground. The ground’s strength must be enough to hold the equipment’s weight and ensure safety during work. The legs are opened and fixed. Then, the worker uses hydraulic control to open the four legs of the concrete pump truck. After the legs touch the ground, the concrete pump truck is leveled to make sure that the whole truck is flat to prevent it from falling. Some work sites will place wooden boards or steel plates under the legs to spread the weight.

2. Equipment Check

Check the hydraulic system, oil level, pipe sealing, and electric control system. Confirm whether the remote control, power supply, and the mixer in the hopper are working well.

3. Work Phase

Concrete feeding: The concrete pump truck pours the concrete into the hopper at the back of the concrete pump truck. The hopper has a mixer to stop concrete from separating and sinking.

S valve switch: Under the hopper is the pumping system, with the main part being the S-shaped valve. The S valve is in charge of switching between the two moving cylinders, letting the concrete go into them in turn.

Suction and pushing: When the piston of one cylinder moves back, the concrete in the hopper is sucked into the cylinder. At the same time, the piston of the other cylinder moves forward, pushing out the concrete sucked in the last cycle into the pipe. The two cylinders move in turn, making the “suction – push” cycle.

Continuous cycle: The S valve swings fast left and right, always linking with the cylinder that is pushing. By turning the suction and pushing, a steady and nonstop concrete flow is made.

4. Moving Stage

When entering the moving pipe, the concrete goes from the cylinder into the steel pipe system inside the boom. The boom spreads the concrete. The boom of the concrete pump truck can stretch and turn in many parts, covering a range of tens to hundreds of meters. The worker uses a wireless remote control to control the boom and the end of the pipe.

Out through a rubber hose, at the end of the boom, a soft rubber hose is joined to set the last pouring place. The worker holds the hose opening and pours the concrete to the desired place, such as floor slabs, walls, or inside the formwork of tall buildings.

5. Cleaning and Finish Stage

After the work, the remaining concrete should be out. The remaining materials in the hopper and the pipe should be pumped out or emptied as much as possible.

High-pressure water cleaning: High-pressure water is put from the hopper opening, and the clean water is pushed through the pipe by the piston to clean the inside. Some pump trucks also use cleaning balls (sponge balls) to be pushed with the water to make sure of full cleaning.

Reset and check: Fold back the boom and fix it. Fold back the legs and check for any problems, such as oil leaks or wear. Drive the concrete pump truck back to the parking area to end the work.
